Beamtime accepted!

I’ve been fortunate enough to get a proposal accepted to go to ISIS, RAL, UK to do some small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). Many thanks (in advance) to the STFC.

The experiment will investigate structural transitions within solutions of alkylated fullerene-C60, from the “isotropic” clustered state to a gel. We’ve already found that the gel has a really interesting structure (and some useful charge-carrying properties), but some strange things happen when switching the solvent from n-hexane to n-decane. For one thing, it takes the gel 100x longer to form!! This suggests either that the final structure in the two solvents may be slightly different, or that the mechanism to get to the final structure is different. SANS should give us a clue…
